Adam Stubbings profile picture

Director and Principal Adviser Adam Stubbings set up Compass Financial in May 2009, having worked as an IFA in London for ten years. He started the business with 40 clients and £4M of clients' money under his advice, before going on to acquire the portfolios of three retiring IFAs, bringing client numbers up to 600 with £60M of clients' money under his advice. Further growth through acquisition is planned during 2016.

Educated at TS Indefatigable, a Naval College on Anglesey where he was Head Boy, Adam later moved to London, where he met Katy, his future wife. Katy came from Ruthin, and this is where they have settled with their two young daughters. Both girls are students at Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay and are enjoying all the opportunities there including participation in sports teams.

Earlier in Adam’s working life, he took a four year career break to pursue his passion for Scuba Diving and set up AKS Diving where he taught to Instructor Trainer level. He also made underwater documentaries for companies such as Channel 4 and the Discovery Channel.

Back in March 2014 Adam went on an expedition across Baffin Island in the Arctic where he was part of a five person team sleeping under canvas, walking 140 miles in 10 days in average temperatures of -28 degrees. This trip helped raise much needed funds for the Youth Adventure Trust.

Adam is an endurance sports enthusiast competing in the Ironman Wales event in 2013 and, in the Spring of 2015, he completed the Manchester Marathon in 3 hours 37 minutes - a personal best. Also in 2015, Adam took part in the Slateman Triathlon in Snowdonia in May, Ironman UK (Bolton) in July and Ironman Wales in September. In 2016 Adam decided to take a year off from triathlon, and instead focusing on distance swimming completing the 10km swim in 2016 in Lake Windermere as part of the Great North Swim event. Further events are planned for later this year which might include a trekking expedition to the Skeleton Coast in Namibia.

On a more local and a family level, Adam, Katy and the girls head off to their boat in Conwy Marina most weekends and he is a member of Ruthin Pwllglas Golf Club (Compass sponsors the first tee).

Adam also has a passion for horology. He is fascinated by the detail and workmanship involved in designing and creating top quality watches and has been known to advise his clients on watch purchases!

Paul Nelson profile picture

Paul joined Compass Financial in April 2013, having spent more than 30 years in the Financial Services industry.

He worked previously at managerial level for both Nat West Bank and The Halifax in the North West of England, moving on when the banks moved away from offering financial advice – Paul's specialist area.

He now has his own client portfolio in Compass Financial and supports Adam with his clients too. In 2015, Paul gained a Certificate in Regulated Equity Release, giving us the opportunity to offer client advice in this area.

Married with a grown up son and daughter, Paul lives on the Wirral. A lifelong Everton FC supporter and season ticket holder, he played football himself when he was a little younger and also coached his local junior football team for seven years.

Paul regularly goes jogging and he plays an occasional game of golf. As well as being an Everton FC enthusiast, he also enjoys rugby league and he follows Warrington Wolves.

Ceri joined Compass Financial in March 2010 and provides the technical support to the business – researching products and investment funds and preparing client specific reports which detail the options available to them.

Following her degree in Accountancy and Finance, Ceri joined a leading advisory firm in North Wales as a graduate trainee adviser where she gained a Diploma in Financial Planning.  After nearly five years, Ceri left to work for Conwy Council for a short time before joining Compass.

In 2015 Ceri qualified as a Financial Adviser and now works alongside Adam and Paul but divides her time between being an Adviser and a Paraplanner. Ceri is continuing to study with the Chartered Insurance Institute and hopes to become a Chartered Financial Planner in due course.

Born and brought up in Pentrefoelas, Ceri lives there with her partner and young son.

When not at work, she enjoys a busy life with regular trips to Pembrokeshire to visit family.  She enjoys shopping and attempting to play golf – her partner, who is a member at Conwy Golf Club, is teaching her to play.

Amy Gosse profile picture

Amy joined Compass Financial in July 2013 after graduating with a 2.1 degree in History and Politics from Lancaster University.

Compass Financial is supporting her as she trains with The Chartered Insurance Institute towards her Certificate in Paraplanning and so far, she has passed the following exams: R01 Financial services, regulation and ethics, R02 Investment principles and risk and R03 Personal Taxation. She is now working towards her final Paraplanning module to obtain the qualification.

Paraplanning involves administrative duties, adviser support and conducting product research. She fully expects to be qualified within the next two years following further study and is enjoying her training and this new professional direction she has taken.

Outside of work, Amy likes jogging, horse riding and netball. Amy has lived in Ruthin since childhood, and, as her home is near to Adam and his family, she has become a reliable (and very popular) babysitter for Adam’s daughters.

Helen joined Compass Financial as an Executive Administrator in February 2015. She had spent the previous twelve years as Bookkeeper and Administrator at the National White Water Centre near Bala in Snowdonia – a job that she loved, not least because she was able to take her dog to work with her every day! Prior to that role, she had worked as a PA for a number of companies around North Wales and Cheshire.

Looking after the money side of things has been a key feature in Helen’s out-of-work activity over the years. She has been Treasurer on a number of voluntary committees in her local community, including the Clawddnewydd and Clocaenog Sports Committee which runs a sports day every July.

Helen’s other interests include the responsibilities that come with sharing a largely self- sufficient lifestyle with her husband. The Coppacks grow all their own vegetables and keep pigs, chickens and ducks at their home which is registered as a small holding. Helen also keeps fit with some Nordic Walking in the nearby forest.

Katy - Adam’s wife - has been involved with the business since it started in May 2009, and now works two days a week supporting the Paraplanners and Advisers. She has worked in financial services since 1991 – having been a technical support to Independent Financial Advisers on behalf of Friends Provident. She was based initially in Kingston upon Thames before relocating to Manchester where she worked until 2007. Katy then decided to take time out to be with their young daughters but now that the girls are a little older, she has been able to step in to help Adam and the team at Compass.
